MANAGER'S MESSAGE

I would like to thank everyone for helping make this past summer such a wonderful success.
The wonderful weather, the fabulous parties, the great comraderie, and all the great amenities the Bath and Tennis club has to offer combined to make it a banner year.
I hope everyone spent as much time at the club as possible.  Although your Yankees, Phillies, or Mets failed to reach the promiseland if you cheer for the Bosox (go Mary DeMarco) you are knocking on the door as this goes to press.  Good luck.
I would like to thank all the employees and managers for their hard work and dedication for the part they played in making the club run so smoothly.  They are to be complimented for their efforts.  We are lucky to have such a fine staff.
In closing may I extend my very best wishes to everyone for a healthy winter.  Enjoy the holidays and your families.  I look forward to seeing you again soon.  Best wishes always.

Sincerely,
Jim McConville

Tennis News

2007 was another exciting year for tennis at our Club.  In the second year of it truly being the Monmouth Beach Bath and Tennis Club for all, court usage was up significantly.  It was great to see so many members donning whites and using the courts during the day and evening hours.  And best of all, we are happy to report that most actually looked like they were having fun!!
During the season we enjoyed participating in many competitive intra-Club tournaments.   We had great fun watching friendly battles during the Family Doubles competition -- always a highlight of the summer - as well as during our third annual Ange Pisani Men's Member Guest tournament.    As always, this event brought out a large number of teams, producing superb tennis from all. We're thrilled to report that more teams than ever participated this year in just about every adult tournament we held.  And, the Shore Cup Challenge was played again this year on Sept. 8th and all the teams from all the clubs had a wonderful time.
We offer sincere thanks to Anita O'Neill for starting our new Friday night Mixed Doubles Tennis Parties.   Anita, along with Kim Rose were terrific in getting these fun evenings of tennis started. However, I must report that although many members were willing to join in the fun, the weather was not as accommodating.  When the weather did hold up a good number of teams turned out for several great evenings of tennis, food, drink and great fun.  We will definitely continue this next summer and hope more members come out to play.
All of our Ladies' tennis teams played well during the summer season.   We wish to extend a very special thank you to those who graciously volunteered their time to captain these teams.  It's never an easy job corralling 15 teams of 30 women each week and managing the logistics of court assignments.  And, we won't even mention what happens when the weather doesn't cooperate.  But again, thank you all for your valuable help.   We invite more women to join our teams next year and have lots of fun playing competitive tennis.
This summer, our Junior Program welcomed Andrew Katz as the new Assistant Pro. He did a wonderful job instructing our children and we hope to see even more budding tennis stars on the courts next year.  This is a great program and a great way to start of lifelong love of tennis for our young members.
Another piece of good news is the sales from the Pro Shop are up this year over last.
Finally and most importantly, we want to thank you everyone for their support of our tennis programs, both adult and junior.  We believed we turned our programs around and filled the courts again just like in years past.  And, we couldn't have done this without everyone's support.  So thanks!

Tearoom News

The Tearoom Committee is pleased to report that the Tearoom and snack bar operations for the summer of 2007 have exceeded financial expectations for the third year in a row. Once again, favorable weather has been a contributing factor to the bottom line. Another important component of the Tearoom's finances is the revenue derived from the Club's banquet business. The number of weddings and other functions held at the Club was up over last year. Credit must be given to Anita Becker for her ability to successfully coordinate the various events. Our Club continues to build a reputation as an excellent venue for weddings and banquets.

Throughout the season, the Tearoom Committee welcomed comments and suggestions from the membership regarding ways in which we might enhance the dining experience offered at the Club. There were also a significant number of comments complementing the Tearoom staff on their consistently high level of service. Some of the factors that contributed to the superior performance of our staff included:

1)  The return of most of last year's staff. which eliminated the need for extensive training of new employees;

    2)   The tireless efforts of
          Allison Chisolm and
          Erin McConville, and

3)      The use of the training manual authored last year by our chef, Gregg Forster.

This summer saw the return of Sunday breakfast at the Club. Breakfasts had been discontinued years ago due to poor participation. When reintroduced this year, the idea was enthusiastically received. The Tearoom averaged 80 covers each Sunday morning in July and August and we will offer Sunday breakfast again next year. It is important to note that the suggestion for breakfast was made by a number of members responding to last year's survey. This Fall, the Tearoom's weekend hours have been expanded to include Friday evenings in addition to the usual Saturday and Sunday afternoon and evening hours. This change was also suggested on last year's survey.

Over the winter, improvements will be made to the ventilation of the Snack Bar. There are two proposals we are currently considering to alleviate the excessive heat condition that persists in this area. We will also be discussing the possibility of opening on Tuesday evenings next season. The summer of 2008 is shaping up to be another success. With 4 weddings already on the calendar, and the enthusiastic support of the membership, the Tearoom Committee remains confident that our dining facilities will continue to be an integral part of the family experience unique to our Club.

 Beach News

With a final bit of luck from Mother Nature and no hurricanes on the horizon, we managed to get through this season with a nearly perfect beach record.  So perfect, in fact, that many umbrellas on many afternoons were open well past 6 PM.  What a glorious sight it was!

Our beach was quite clean this summer thanks to help from our members, our beach boys and our contract with the City of Long Branch.  A huge thanks to all for picking up after ourselves this summer.  Your little bit of work made a big difference in the cleanliness of our beach.

There seemed to be no shortage of umbrellas this summer thanks to a new vendor.  He was able to make much-needed deliveries of umbrellas both before the Memorial Day and July 4th weekends.  We will work on the shortage of your favorite high-backed chairs in time for opening day next season.  To add to the safety of our members, we purchased "sand-grabbers" for the umbrellas. This helped keep them secure on windy days on the beach.

The water trampoline added to the summer fun this season. Although I cannot personally attest to its excitement, I am told it went over well with the membership including some brave adults who wandered out to sea to test it.  Our volleyball net was well used and we are considering setting aside specific times for pick-up games, similar to our basketball schedule, next summer.

As our luck would have it this summer, the weather was magnificent for Beach Day.  The best day of the season, according to some, we managed to chow down on more than 400 hot dogs followed by gallons of soda, ice cream and cotton candy.  Comedy dives and family relays were revived and added to the enjoyment.  But, please know we could never have wonderful, memory-filled days as Beach Day if it weren't for the help of our wonderful staff.  They are just the best.

The children were busy this summer with the addition of an arts and crafts program given by Lauren Williams and Erin McConville.  They also enjoyed with a very successful movie night.  More than 75 children watched a great movie on a great summer night while munching on popcorn.  We hope more children take advantage of our arts and crafts next year and we will definitely be adding more movie nights for their enjoyment.

Our beach was more secure this summer with the institution of identifying wrist bands for our members' guests.  This really helped our security guys know who should be here and who shouldn't.  And, we had a 20% increase in guest-fee revenue.

That's it for my report.  I hope everyone has a safe and healthy winter and look forward to seeing everyone next May.

Message from the President

Dear Members:

Welcome to the inaugural electronic Beachcomber!  We hope you enjoy it!!

We  have decided to send it out to the Membership twice a year--in the fall as a wrap up of the season, and in the spring to open our new season. It will be hard mailed ONLY to those Members who do not have access to e-mail.  Our goal is to become more efficient with our time and money by using email to get our news to the Membership.  We hope as many members as possible will help us with this.
Now, I would like to give a quick overview of the accomplishments of the Board this past year.  The most obvious, of course, is the Rehab project.  This huge, ambitious, project was completed on time and on budget.  The thanks must be directed to the Rehab Committee consisting of Paul Kolarsick, Chris Morris, Loren Rabon, Bob Sorokolit, Judy Stach and Anthony Weber, our Associate Member. The men and women on this project gave literally, hundreds of hours of their time to our Club.  It absolutely, positively could NEVER have been accomplished without them. We also need to thank Brian Gwynn Williams, our plant and project manager, who ran the job and protected our interests every single day.  Brian knows every nook and cranny on this campus and his knowledge was invaluable, both in time and money.

The Finance Committee --Joe Turchyn, Bill Collopy, Joe Robertson, Don Steckroth and Greg Tourto has also done a superb job on their end.  They worked hard to come up with a finance plan to suit the needs of the Membership and our Club.  With everyone's continued cooperation, we are able to pay our bills on time, and, with our controller carefully managing our bank accounts, we are actually earning interest on our money.  For the first time in the history of the Club, we have a Capital Reserve Account. Unprecedented.

After reviewing the surveys, it was apparent that two of our biggest concerns last year were the over-crowded parking lot and members not signing in their guests.  I have to say, that once again, with the cooperation of the Membership, the parking lot was in much better shape this season and more members than ever registered their guests.

With the new rules regarding the parking stickers, the problem was considerably better.  The lot was closed to cars one afternoon this entire summer for a very short time. And, our most crowded days, Fourth of July and Beach Day, parking was manageable.  Additional handicapped parking places were added for those who needed it.

This yearnew rules were put into place requiring guests to wear bracelets while at our Club.  Although some initially resisted this idea, in the end it worked beautifully --  It was a win win for everyone.  Members were able to enjoy their guests at our beautiful Club and the Club benefitted from additional revenue.  Guest revenue was up about 20%.  Thank you to the Members again for your cooperation with this new procedure... the bracelets will be back next season.

This year on the beach, we added more chairs, more umbrellas and, to the delight of children and some adults, an ocean trampoline!  The beach was cleaner than ever and so has the ocean!  A couple of visits from sharks added to this summer's  excitement!

We have also had more adults on the tennis courts this year than in a long time --  more participation in tournaments; more ladies at the Wednesday night and Friday morning clinics; more men on Wednesday evenings and Sunday mornings, and we added a twilight mixed doubles party on Friday evenings.  The children have been like little bugs scattered all over the courts in the Junior Program. It is wonderful to see tennis is back at MBBT!!!

We have had record numbers of members and guests at every single party this summer.  We added an Associate Member Cocktail Party to our social schedule and it brought the Associates out of the woodwork!!  We have seen more Associates at events and on the beach this summer than ever before and we are just thrilled!  We have an Associate Member on the Tea Room, Entertainment, Tennis, Rehab and House & Grounds Committees and their input and enthusiasm has been most appreciated and very valuable.

Our swim team continues to build both in numbers and in skill.  Coach Paul Burke has been working on teaching our children stroke mechanics, pride in team and in self.  We had 106 children on the team this year, which is more than we have had in a very long time.

The Tea Room had a very busy and successful year.  Our Chef, Greg Forster, was back for his 4th season.  We have had a wonderful season of lunches and dinners on the deck in the Tea Room, lots of private parties in the Ball Room and in both Membership cabanas.  Back, by popular demand, was the weekend breakfast and what a huge success it was!  We served as many as 90 breakfasts on Sunday mornings!  As a topping, the blessing of lots of good weather also helped to make the Tea Room a success this summer.  With our season extended through September and October, Members had a longer opportunity to use up their minimum.

Even our children had a memorable social summer.  Beach Day was a great time with bouncing things and sliding things and face painting and free hot dogs and ice cream!  If that was not enough, there was a splash party!  The kids loved bringing floats and toys into the pool normally not allowed.  To top it all off, we had a movie night in the Ballroom with about 75 young people in attendance! Oh, to have the privilege of growing up in such a wonderful environment!!!

The addition that has gotten the most attention this year is the new

e-newsletter.  We have had over a dozen publications this season!!!  It is great to be able to communicate with the Membership on a weekly basis and keep everyone updated on what is going on at the Club .The pictures in our e-newsletter add a great dimension and have been submitted by various members over the summer.  Keep them coming!  We will have an out-of-season mailing that will probably arrive once a month but we are still working out details.  It will be fun to see great, colored pictures of the beach during those cold, wet, gray winter days.

From a safety standpoint, we added additional security on the boardwalk during the day and at night.  We have had fewer problems this year with non-members walking around the property, using our bathrooms or trying to use the pool or other facilities.  We also added two defibrillators to the facility.  We now have them in the bar, key room and the tennis pro shop and the staff is trained in their use.  The good news, here, is we have never needed them!

I think the thing that we can be the most proud of is the Board itself.  This has been a very hard working, cohesive Board.  The Members of the Board give up hours of their personal time and give their professional expertise to their particular committee.  Most of you really will never, ever know how lucky this Club is to have such hard working, dedicated people working on behalf of the Club.  We have a good cross section of Members and have developed a mutual respect for each other.  We have had many, many issues to go over this past year and have had great discussions.  We don't always agree but we have learned to agree to disagree

I would like to thank the Board Members whose terms are up this year.  Diane Tolkowsky has been a Board member for 3 years.  During that time, she has helped to turn the tennis program around and has breathed new life into it.  As I mentioned earlier, the adults are playing, the kids are playing, the courts are crowded and tournaments are filled.  This is no accident. Diane's enthusiasm has paid off and we are all the beneficiaries of it.

The E-newsletter is also a great success thanks to Diane.  She is our weekly editor and publisher.  I have asked Diane to stay on the Tennis committee and to continue with the e newsletter and she has very graciously agreed to do so.  I thank her very much. I will miss her a great deal at our monthly meetings.

Bob Sorokolit will also be leaving this year after 3 hears.  Bob has been a very important part of the House & Grounds committee and the Rehab Committee.  His common sense, no nonsense approach to business has helped us with these important committees and with our Board meetings.  Bob has a unique way of cutting to the chase, keeping us on target and moving on all at the same time.  I will miss his perspective and support every month.

Amanda Martinelli is our Associate Liaison.  She, too has been with us for 3 years.  She was a great representative for the Associates, bringing their voices and requests to a Board that may otherwise not have known what the Associates were interested in.

Lastly, I would like to welcome and introduce the new Board Members.  Cathy Hoffbauer will be our new Tennis Trustee working with Jim Ronan.  Carlos Meulener will be on the House & Grounds Committee with Paul Kolarsick.  Anthony Weber will be our new Associate Liaison and will be working on the House & Grounds Committee.

The Committees and Chairs are listed in this Beachcomber. If you have an interest in serving on a Committee, please feel free to contact the Trustee Chair.

Enjoy the rest of this Beachcomber and hang on, Memorial Day Weekend is only how many days away??!!!!!!!!!

Bar at the Beach -- Another Banner Year!

For the 2007 season, there were three improvements to the facility. First, we replaced one of the keg coolers. This, along with the size of the kegs, allowed us to offer 8 different draft beers. Thanks to Paul and Colin's knowledge of beers, we were always offered a great and tasty selection of beers. We also tried to include different wines, liquor and drinks in response to the survey.

Second, a foot bar rail was installed which has added to the pleasure and ambience of the bar. It seems to have been very well received and enjoyed by all.

Third, we have installed another TV on the east wall of the bar and have removed the TV from behind the bar. The TV behind the bar seemed to promote some congestion at the bar. Therefore, the two TVs on the east wall will allow members to enjoy a variety of sports entertainment on HD TVs while not overcrowding the bar. Thanks to John Crilly for all of his help on this improvement.

For next season, we hope to replace the other 12 year old cooler which is quickly fading, add a wine cooler, paint and re-carpet and add back-lighting to the bar. We also will add some speakers which will provide some soothing background music.

Paul did a great job this year in servicing the members. His staff, including Colin and Rory, also tended bar in a courteous and professional manner. I heard of no complaints regarding the bar staff. Some of the staff may not be returning as a result of pursuing their other careers. But I am confident that we will once again have a great staff in 2008.

As with the Club in general, the success of the bar is also contingent upon the weather. In addition to our great staff, the weather was conducive for members and their guests to enjoy the bar facilities. This year the bar once again exceeded its budget in terms of profitability. Last year there was a concern with our cost of sales and as a result we did modify the price of some of the drinks. This seemed to have corrected the problem and I am happy to say that our cost of sales is in the range that it should be.

I don't believe that there were any significant issues that were raised by the members concerning the operations of the bar. As in the past, the bar committee and the staff are sensitive to proper attire in the bar, children in the bar and cell phone use. We certainly want a level of decorum but it should not be such that it stifles the relaxed atmosphere of the bar.

We did implement numbered chits to help with our accounting and reconciliation of orders from members. We have also tried to insure that all orders are posted appropriately and timely to help reduce any clerical errors. We did consider adding another point of sale computer to the bar to facilitate the ordering of drinks, but there just wasn't any room to do so.

We had two types of Happy Hours this season. The first happy hours were the happy hours during the weekdays from 4:00 - 6:00. During these time frames, a special drink was offered. The other Happy hours were the Sunday Happy Hours in June, July and August. Fortunately, the weather cooperated and they went off without a hitch. We had a steel band; Koka and Gary Philips serenade us during those Happy Hours. In the past, some members expressed concern that having the musicians play from under the wooden canopy off the outside seating area was too loud to those who were eating dinner. To address those concerns, we moved the musicians right outside the bar facing the ocean. It seemed that that change worked well. I can say that the "Bucket of beers" was a big hit.

Overall, the bar ran smoothly, serviced the members in a polite and efficient manner and recorded a profit over the anticipated budget. If you have any questions or concerns, the only way that they can be addressed is if they are made known. Please do not hesitate to give me a call

Swim Team and Pool

The Swim Team had another enjoyable season!  Coach Paul Buerck and his staff returned again this summer and led the team to some very competitive meets.  It was wonderful to see the enthusiasm as the swimmers cheered on their teammates.  Our swim team has grown to 106 swimmers and we hope to have more next year.  Season highlights included our swimmers' singing the National Anthem, the Second Annual Pancake Breakfast and the Silver Cup Meet with Seabright.  Our swim team is a very social group. The swimmers, coaches and parents enjoyed the pizza parties after the home meets. Our season concluded with the Swim Team Dinner.  The Dinner was very well attended and the children were beaming as they received their awards.  The confidence that is developed by participating in the swim team and the friendships that are formed are immeasurable!  The support of our volunteers and club members was outstanding and contributed to the success of the program.

This summer Coach Paul also offered swimming lessons, stroke clinics and the Life Saving Course to become a Certified Lifeguard.  During the month of July, five teenage members successfully completed the Life Saving Course.
We also resurrected the Water Aerobics class this summer.  Our instructor was Susan Byer from the Red Bank YMCA.  The class was offered as a trial in July and was so successful that we continued through August.  Our members enjoyed the pool and got a great workout!
We have had a wonderful summer and are looking forward to next season.  We also look forward to returning the Silver Cup to MBBTC!

House and Grounds

This past Memorial Day Weekend, members walked through the portals of our club to view the newly renovated/reconstructed buildings.

Everything looked nearly the same, yet, somehow a bit different, a bit neater, a bit more plumb, a tad less paint on the shingles.  What we saw was the culmination of over two years of planning and implementation of the reconstruction of our gorgeous buildings.

The success of this ambitious project was the result of several factors:

First, the membership who voted overwhelmingly to accept the financial responsibility to fund the project

Secondly, the individual members who constituted the Finance Committee.  This group gave their time and expertise to devise the most advantageous financing package for the repayment of our debt burden.  Their knowledge and efforts resulted in considerable cost savings for all club members.

Thirdly, the members who constituted the Building Committee: this group was responsible for approving the design of the new buildings, selecting the finish materials that looked so great, and overseeing the actual construction process as the work progressed.  This group worked tirelessly to ensure that the architectural integrity of the Club's buildings would not be compromised.

Finally, our long time employee, Brian Gwen-Williams worked diligently to ensure that the Club's interests were protected on a daily basis.  Literally, the construction project became Brian's life for over seven months.  We thank Brian for his commitment to MBBTC.

Congratulations to all.

Membership

During 2007, the Membership Committee reviewed the admissions policy and revised the application procedure for new members.  The club welcomed Jack and Vicki Ziegler as new members from the Outside List and also welcomed 11 new Associates.  The population of the club currently stands at 300 Certificate Holders and 217 Provisional and Associate members.  This total of 517 memberships, when compared with the total of 328 memberships in 1994, reflects an increase of 189 families or potential families over the past 13 years.  The 2007 total of all status sheet members and dependents now stands at 1,661 which, when compared with the total of 976 in 1994, reflects an increase of 687 individuals over the past 13 years.
